Francis Wray has worked for over 30 years in the application of computing to solve problems in industry and commerce. He has significant experience in related international projects, marketing issues and the transfer of technology into industry. He is a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing at the University of Kingston.

Curriculum Vitae

Francis Wray graduated with a BA in Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge in 1972 where he was awarded a PhD in Geophysics in 1978. From 1977 to 1979 he worked as an Assistant Mathematics Master at Charterhouse School and from 1979 until 1989 at Topexpress Ltd, a Cambridge-based scientific and computer consultancy company. At Topexpress he worked as a research scientist, a group leader and then a director and in 1985 established the parallel processing group. This group pioneered the use of transputer systems to solve a range of problems for clients including Rolls Royce, British Aerospace, the TSB and the Ministry of Defence. In 1989 he joined Parsytec Computer GmbH based in Aachen and was responsible for the publicly funded projects of the company. Since April 1993 he has worked as an independent consultant. His clients include:

  • The European Commission;
  • The Smith Group;
  • The Department of Trade and Industry;
  • The Scottish Office;
  • Olivetti Research;
  • UKOnline;
  • Hitachi Europe;
  • Platform Computing;and
  • Parsytec Computer.

    Francis Wray has worked for EPCC since 1993 helping its staff develop a successful commmercial consultancy business based on delivering real solutions to both large and small companies. He has further contributed to the development of the centre as the principal author of the successful ENTICE, CALEDONIA, GRIDStart and NextGRID proposals

    Francis Wray has significant experience in European Union collaborative projects. This includes:

     Evaluation of project proposals involving the High Performance and Networking (HPCN) unit of DG13:

  • May 1993 of the February 1993 call for proposals
  • March 1995 of the December 1994 call for proposals.
  • June 1995 of the second stage of the December 1994 call for proposals.
  • February 1996 of the December 1995 call for proposals. (Rapporteur for whole call)

  • Reviewing of projects:

  • 1994: Reviewer of the DESIRE project.
  • 1994-96: Reviewer of the PARADISE project
  • 1994-95: Reviewer of the PARTEL and PARAMATION projects.
  • 1996-1998: Reviewer of the MICA project
  • 1997-2000: Reviewer of the DANHIT, DUTCH, FINNOVA and TTN-MV technology transfer nodes.

  • He has been the principal author of the following successful proposals:

  • The PARAPET Long Term Research Project started in December 1996;
  • The ENTICE technology transfer node started in March 1997;
  • The BIOTITAN technology transfer node started in March 1997.

  • EU project Management
    He was manager of the Parapet Long Term Research Project (No. 23493) running from December 1996 to December 1999.

     HPCN-TTN Coordination
    He was a member of the TTN coordination team working with Smith Group Limited and ARTTIC.

    Smith Group


    Member of the Europort2 Management team with responsibility for benchmarking activities and for organising the Europort exhibition and workshop at the Supercomputing '95 conference held in San Diego in December 1995. Organiser of the Europort HPCN96 and EITC96 exhibitions. Member of the HPCN-TTN Coordination Team. Organiser of the HPCN-TTN stands at the EITC97, IST98 and IST99 exhibitions.
