Francis Wray has worked for over 30 years in the application of computing to solve problems in industry and commerce. He has significant experience in related international projects, marketing issues and the transfer of technology into industry. He is a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing at the University of Kingston.

Francis Wray graduated with a BA in Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge in 1972 where he was awarded a PhD in Geophysics in 1978. From 1977 to 1979 he worked as an Assistant Mathematics Master at Charterhouse School and from 1979 until 1989 at Topexpress Ltd, a Cambridge-based scientific and computer consultancy company. At Topexpress he worked as a research scientist, a group leader and then a director and in 1985 established the parallel processing group. This group pioneered the use of transputer systems to solve a range of problems for clients including Rolls Royce, British Aerospace, the TSB and the Ministry of Defence. In 1989 he joined Parsytec Computer GmbH based in Aachen and was responsible for the publicly funded projects of the company. Since April 1993 he has worked as an independent consultant. Francis Wray has worked for EPCC since 1993 helping its staff develop a successful commmercial consultancy business based on delivering real solutions to both large and small companies. He has further contributed to the development of the centre as the principal author of the successful ENTICE, CALEDONIA, GRIDStart and NextGRID proposals
